Size of the Ngorongoro Crater & Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area spans approximately 8,300 square kilometers, with the Ngorongoro Crater forming its central feature. This gigantic volcanic caldera boasts a diameter of about 19 kilometers and a depth of around 600 meters. It covers an area of approximately 260 square kilometers, making it among the world’s largest calderas that are not submerged.

Diverse Wildlife

The park’s compact size belies its richness in biodiversity. Ngorongoro Crater National Park offers a haven for an extensive range of wildlife. As home to the Big Five, the park boasts healthy populations of lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and the critically endangered black rhinoceros. Besides, during the wet season, large herds of wildebeests, zebras, and Thompson’s gazelles flock here to graze. Hyenas, hippos, cheetahs also roam the park. The soda lake in the crater often draws flamingos.

What is the Ngorongoro Crater known for?

Anytime is best for wildlife viewing in Ngorongoro Crater National Park, though the dry season (June to October) offers magnificent views.
